Best Teepee Tent for Kids – Teepee Joy Review

A teepee tent for the kids has been on their (who am I kidding, my) wish list for a while.

On a whim, I recently purchased a teepee from Target’s Pillowfort line that looked cute enough. However, when I took it out of the bag to assemble, the quality was subpar.

The canvas was rough and stiff and I had a hard time screwing the legs together. Of course, those are not the types of things Max and Alexa care about and they loved playing in the teepee tent, nonetheless. But not even a week passed before Max the Tornado snapped the poles of one of the legs which led to the early demise of the Target teepee. (Note: Do NOT let your children attempt to scale the teepee.)

As luck would have it, by then, a teepee from Teepee Joy was en route. Thank you, Lee Orlian!

Teepee Joy is a small, family-owned company based in Illinois. Each teepee tent is handcrafted and made from 100% cotton. There is also an option to buy a matching play mat and/or pillow set. I absolutely love the beautiful color and pattern options which I think would look attractive in any nursery or play room.

When the teepee tent finally arrived, I immediately noticed a difference in the quality of the wooden dowels and fabric. I know it’s a minor detail but the dowels smelled like fresh pine and were smooth and well-sanded. They screwed together snugly and haven’t snapped yet so that’s a huge plus!

Eagle eyes might see the marker stain on the teepee. Good thing it’s machine-washable!

Assembly was very straightforward and easy. Almost to the point where I wasn’t sure I was doing it right. But I followed Teepee Joy’s video instructions and it opened up into a perfectly stable teepee.

The 100% cotton fabric is thick and soft and is the same material used for the pillows and lightly padded play mat. There are fabric ties that can keep the entrance flaps open or closed. There are also two “windows” on each side of the teepee with flaps that can be secured open by fabric ties as well.

Max insisted on being a model when I was taking pictures.

The craftsmanship is truly superb with even stitching and no loose threads. I love when I come across well-made, quality products. A teepee tent is such a simple thing but Teepee Joy really does a simple thing very well.

Another detail that I appreciate is that the legs are enclosed at the bottom. Most teepees have the legs exposed so the fabric can easily ride up. The enclosed legs help to keep the sides of the tent more taut and secure.

My only complaint – and it’s a minor one – is that it’s the teensiest bit smaller than I would prefer. The bottom is 45″ square and is perfect for one big kid (or two small ones.) But, don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean Max and Alexa aren’t able to pile into it together, along with all the pillows and their stuffed animals so there’s certainly enough room for that. I just wish I had different size options to choose from.

And, of course, I have to end with my absolute favorite part about having a teepee from Teepee Joy: I love watching Max and Alexa, gripping each other’s hands while racing into the tent and collapsing on the mat in a heap of squeals and giggles. I see them rolling around and hear their little whispers coming from the tent where they know that this is their own secret place, for just the two of them, no mommies allowed.

Disclosure: I was not financially compensated for writing this post. I did, however, receive a sample product for review purposes. Nonetheless, this review is 100% my honest opinion and, to the best of my ability, an unbiased review.
