Best Non-Toxic Household Cleaning Products: ATTITUDE Living Review

Ok, I have a confession to make. Prior to discovering ATTITUDE Living, I purchased all of the toxic big name cleaning products, e.g., Palmolive, Windex, Lysol, Swiffer Wet, etc, without a second thought.

While I try my best to be conscious of toxins in my family’s life – y’all know I’ve written a lot about non-toxic baby products on my blog – one area that I was sorely lagging in, and overlooked for far too long, was the household cleaning products that our family used.

Reflecting back, I instinctively knew these products were toxic: I would always air out the room for several hours after cleaning and I wouldn’t let the kids (or dog) near an area I had just cleaned. It makes even more sense now after a recently published study found that cleaning your house may be as bad as smoking 20 cigarettes a day!!

Well, rewind to a few months ago when it was time for us to move to the house we are living in now. I suddenly felt motivated to properly research non-toxic household cleaning products. (Truth be told, I didn’t want to pack the toxic cleaning products we had accumulated over the years – a large jug of Pinesol and tubs of Lysol Disinfecting Wipes come to mind.)

I immediately checked my favorite resource for researching non-toxic products – Environmental Working Group. [See here for their guide on healthy cleaning.]

The problem was that while I found many highly-rated non-toxic products in different cleaning categories, it was exceedingly difficult to find one brand that sold A-rated products across all of the categories. (For instance, a company’s dishwashing soap will have an A rating but their all-purpose cleaner has a C rating – I’m looking at you Honest Company.)

I like to keep my life simple. I was determined to find one company that I could trust, no matter what product I bought from them.

That’s what brought me to my obsession with ATTITUDE Living household cleaning products (among other non-toxic and natural products that they sell). Every single cleaning product sold by ATTITUDE Living has the highest possible rating.

For those of you who have never heard of this company, myself included, ATTITUDE Living is a Canadian company whose slogan is live consciously. On their site, they make the following commitments:

  • Worry-free and natural ingredients.  The products are made from vegetable and mineral-based sources and do not contain any cancer-causing chemicals, mutagens and endocrine disruptors and
  • Hypoallergenic. The products are hypoallergenic – meaning they have minimal allergen content and are safe for sensitive skin.
  • Tested in an Independent Laboratory. The products are tested by an independent lab for the absence of cancer-causing chemicals like 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide.
  • Eco-Friendly. The company will aim to minimize their negative impact on the environment and make all products using 100% renewable energy in order to reduce their carbon footprint. The bottles are made with recycled HDPE #2 plastic.
  • Cruelty-Free & Vegan. All of their products do not undergo animal testing and are certified vegan – meaning no animal-derived ingredients.

All of this sounds amazing. However, no matter how non-toxic and eco-friendly a cleaning product is, it’s only good if it actually works, right?

After making two bulk orders of ATTITUDE Living products, I currently have a pantry filled with their products. It’s fair to say that I think the products work and I love them.

This is a brief rundown of the household cleaning products that I’ve had a chance to personally try:

All Purpose Cleaner

This cleaner has a light, fresh smell and is effective at cleaning most things around the house. It has very few ingredients and the ones that are most “poorly” rated are lavender oil and grapefruit oil – that should say a lot!

Window & Mirror Cleaner

This is probably my favorite product in terms of the contrast between the leading toxic product (i.e., Windex). I used to dread cleaning windows and mirrors because the smell was so overwhelming. I would wear gloves and a mask to minimize the inhalation of toxic fumes and exposure to a caustic substance. Many Windex products contain ammonia which is highly toxic and people who are exposed to ammonia on a regular basis often develop asthma or chronic bronchitis. In contrast, this glass cleaner has a scent that is light and fresh and, in my opinion, it cleans my glass and windows even better than Windex!

Bathroom Cleaner

The bathroom cleaner formula is slightly more acidic which helps to break up soap scum and lime more effectively. It is the strongest smelling of the other cleaners but still mild. It is a powerful cleaner without the typical noxious scents that other bathroom cleaners have.

Dishwashing Liquid

This dishwashing soap is very gentle on the skin and hands and has a subtle scent. The soap has a great lather and cuts grease as effectively as Palmolive/Dawn without the toxic chemicals and fragrances.

Fruit & Vegetable Wash

The people who live in my household, ahem, my husband, like washing our fruits and vegetables with a spray. If you do too, then this is a great non-toxic spray that is supposed to help wash away pesticides and wax residue. Just keep in mind that the use of these sprays may not be necessary as studies have found that water will wash your produce just as well.

Hand Soap

As with all their products, the scent is light and fresh without the cloyingness of artificial fragrances. I love that this hand soap is gentle and cleanses without drying out my skin. The soap we used previously, Soft Soap, seems innocuous enough but lists DMDM hydantoin (antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser preservative) as an ingredient. It’s really nice to have the peace of mind that when my kids are washing their hands now, they are no longer coming in contact with toxic chemicals.

Thanks to ATTITUDE Living, our household has now made a complete shift from using toxic household cleaning products to being a much healthier, greener home. (I’m sure there’s other areas we can improve but I try to focus on one thing at a time!)

Also, this is NOT a sponsored post.

I merely want to help spread the word about a yet-to-be-well-known Canadian company that creates non-toxic, natural and effective products. I’ve since recommended this brand to my family and friends who all appreciate that they no longer inhale noxious fumes while cleaning.

Happy, healthy, cleaning everyone! 🙂
